Biodiversity cannot be conserved unless production itself is based on a policy of preserving diversity.

Biodiversity conservation here is seen only in terms of setting aside reserves in undisturbed ecosystems for the purpose of conservation. This schizophrenic approach to biodiversity, which adopts a policy of destruction in production processes and a policy of preservation in 'set-asides', cannot be effective in the conservation of species diversity.
